In Korean culture, rice is considered a dish that is necessary to every meal. It is accompanied by different types of side dishes, meat, and soup. The adapting flavor of rice helps incorporate the distinct flavors of Korean dishes that satisfy an individual. Even though rice cooking is very simple, with very minimal ingredients, a lot of people have a difficult time when it comes to rice. It either comes out too hard due to being undercooked or too soggy because the water wasn't properly measured in. Due to this problem, people often resort to buying expensive rice cookers that does the work for them. This isn't necessary. Cooking Korean recipes should be done manually to have a better feel with the Korean culture, and for a better taste. Good rice can be cooked every time using a pot with even better taste than a rice cooker. To cook perfect rice, please follow these instructions:
The following recipe for rice serves about 4 people.
You will need the following items:
1. A small pot
2. 1.5 cups of water
3. 2 cups of uncooked rice
Step 1.
Soak the uncooked rice in cold water. Add in water until the rice isn't visible--just enough water to coat it. Leave it to rest for about 1 hour. After an hour, rinse the rice repeatedly 4-5 times until the water starts to become clear. Run your hands across them, and make sure to drain the water after rinsing.
Step 2.Add 2 cups of washed-uncooked rice in the pot. Proceed to add 1.5 cups of water. The water should cover the rice about 1 inch from the surface of the rice. Then, set the stove to a high setting, and then leave it alone for 8 minutes, or until most of the water in the pot has evaporated.
Step 3.Once the water is almost all gone, set the stove to the lowest setting. Cover the pot with a lid and leave it be for about 10 minutes. This process will allow the rice to be evenly steamed. After 10 minutes, turn off the heat, and then let the pot rest for an additional 2 minutes. The time may vary slightly depending on the size of your pot. At the 10 minute mark, simply run your spoon to see if it needs more time. Add in a few minutes depending on the state of your rice.
Rice is complete! If you followed this procedure correctly, you should be able to cook perfect rice every time. Having a good foundation in rice cooking is essential in Korean cuisine. With a good base, you can build on top of that with other Korean recipes which are great if you are looking to satisfy yourself with a touch of Korean goodness.
